I-84 Over The Housatonic River

Client: The Middlesex Corporation Owner: ConnDOT Status: On-Going Location: Southbury and Newtown, CT

ACD was contracted to perform the demolition of the existing EB and WB bridges carrying I-84 over the Housatonic River. The work will be performed in multiple phases. The first phase required the complete removal of the WB superstructure. ACD utilized CAT 349 excavators equipped with shears and hammers working on the bridge to remove the deck and stringers. Then, cranes were mobilized to the site to begin removing the steel wind bracing floorbeams, and plate girders. This bridge is a four (4) span continuous structure which required ACD to temporarily tie-down the girders at the piers and remove the spans in specific steps in order to avoid any unplanned collapse. ACD also performed the required lead abatement at cut points. The EB bridge is scheduled to be removed in early 2022.
